Our automatic-buy authors | IWD 2022

It’s no secret that we’re basically a Taylor Jenkins Reid fan club here at book(ish) podcast, having done not one but three whole episodes on her best-selling novels. We are now eagerly anticipating her latest one to come out later this year (of course) as she is one of those authors that we will just automatically buy, a little bit like the entire book community and Sally Rooney, you know?

Today, it’s International Women’s Day, and so we’ve put together a short (and definitely not exhaustive) list of some of our favourite female authors whose novels we automatically buy without fail every time…

Taylor Jenkins Reid

Well we better start with the obvious, we absolutely love the way the TJR writes, it’s so engaging and so easily digestible and the way she has created her own little universe is just absolutely brilliant. Honestly, we thought that Daisy Jones and The Six were a real band for an embarrassingly long amount of time. Her latest novel on Carrie Soto, a minor character from Malibu Rising, is due to come out later this year and we can guarantee we’ll be devouring it immediately as soon as it does.

Beth O’Leary

Again, this one’s not exactly a secret as we’ve already done two whole episodes on Beth O’Leary novels but basically we’re big fans. We love a romance novel and Beth O’Leary just does this so well, The Flatshare in particular is so heart-warming! She is definitely one of go-to’s and therefore one of our hardbacks buys (eek!).

Bernadine Evaristo

Bernadine Evaristo is the best-selling author of girl, woman, other - the absolutely fantastic novel that has hit so many lists, charts and awards in the past few years. But it has to be said that her previous novels are equally as brilliant and we are slowly making our way through the list of them. Mr Loverman, for example, is a great novel and comes highly recommended from us too.

Claire Fuller

Kath is a huge fan of Claire Fuller’s novels - each of them has just such an enticing story with such captivating characters so she is always on her list. Her favourite is Our Endless Numbered Days and if you’re a fan of Room we’d highly recommend it, also Unsettled Ground has been named in numerous lists now including the Women’s Prize Shortlist and the Costa Novel Prize.

Brit Bennett

Brit Bennett’s masterpiece The Vanishing Half was so incredible that we will absolutely be reading everything else that she writes from now on. There’s not much more to say other than READ IT (and then listen to our ep on The Vanishing Half and let us know what you think!).

Dolly Alderton

Of course, last but not least, Dolly Alderton had to make the cut! Her novel Ghosts is the reason we started this whole podcast in the first place but her memoir Everything I know About Love is equally as brilliant and you can rest assured we will be ordering anything else she releases in the future.

There’s so many other incredible authors we could add to this list, so much so that we might need to do a part two but in the meantime we’d love to know your automatic buy authors so do get in touch with us on wearebookish@gmail.com.

& finally may we celebrate ALL women and their achievements always, today and every day x
